Metaphor negotiation

As a result of the ambiguity of metaphor, multivalent metaphor use, and resistance to metaphor, metaphorical meaning occasionally requires negotiation between discourse participants.  Examples that do not refer to DMT but that are clearly compatible if not relatable are https://doi.org/10.1016/j.pragma.2024.01.001 and On the fringes of metaphor: Using ambiguously figurative vague language to pragmatically negotiate sensitive topics in the English as a Medium of Instruction classroom.

When metaphor meanings are negotiated in this way, we are seeing deliberate metaphor use in full action. Research in this area is still in its infancy. Reliable techniques for modelling metaphor’s specific meanings in concrete moments of  cognition and interaction are dearly needed here.
